Pas Pire Pop, I Love You So Much by Avec Le Soleil Sortant De Sa BoucheRelease date: January 20, 2017
Label: Constellation Records
It seems the seed for Pas Pire Pop, I Love You So Much was planted amongst the beautifully chaotic yet cohesive album Zubberdust!, the debut album of Montreal’s genre-spanning Avec Le Soleil Sortant De Sa Bouche. This new album (quite literally) picks up where Zubberdust! left us, as the band slowly unfurls their wonderful syncopation of kraut-rock, post-rock, psychedelic…. (the list goes on and on), bombarding us with something that is beautifully energetic and constantly on the move. Those who were enamoured by the band’s debut effort will no doubt find Pas Pire Pop, I Love You So Much to be an incredibly worthy follow-up, one that once again confounds and delights in equal measure.
There is an almost unrelenting quality to Pas Pire Pop, I Love You So Much, which seems to jump headfirst into a foray of bewildering guitars and synths. It all feels a little intimidating, and yet, there’s something incredibly infectious about it all. The incredible amalgamation of styles and genres results in an album experience that is constantly evolving as it progresses, bringing forth new ideas into the mix that feel somewhat unpredictable, and yet easily and cohesively fall into the mix. It all results in something that can be difficult to put into words, but simply exudes fun and excitement at every turn.
Pas Pire Pip, I Love You So Much feels to be in many ways Zubberdust! part.2, though that is not to say that the album doesn’t have its own flair. At times, this follow-up album feels a little more daring and more experimental, with the syncopated genre-combining elements giving way to sudden musique concrète and field recordings! The deliberate almost sabotaging elements feel reminiscent of Fly Pan Am’s work, but rather than being literal attempts to sabotage the music, now it feels more a part of the natural progression of the albums core style, further pushing the ever progressing styles.
Once again, Avec Le Soleil Sortant De Sa Bouche have created another infectiously enjoyable album experience, where many moments feel like exactly what you’d expect from the band, only for it to suddenly take a left-turn into even weirder territories. There’s just something so incredible about the energy the band inject into each and every song, and how it translates into something that’s weird yet wonderful, bizarre yet incredible, confusing yet somehow making some form of sense. The experimental amalgamations of varying rock genres result in an incredibly varied yet cohesive album experience that’ll stick around for ages. One wonders what secrets have been laid on Pas Pire Pop, I Love You So Much, and what it will culminate into in the future!
