Another Reason by Don't You(,) Mean People?Release date: December 21, 2016
Label: Quaint Studios
The band is called Don’t You(,) Mean People? and they are a post-rock/math-rock trio from Thunder Bay, Ontario Canada. They have been together since 2011 and in 2013 their first release, EP, won album of the year in the TBshows poll. A hard-working band, they have toured from Ontario to Vancouver and have their own recording studio named Quaint Studios. This last release, Another Reason, was recorded there.
They are not a typical post-rock/math-rock band as their sound is very clean. They don’t use any effects or distortion with their instruments. Nonetheless, they are still successful in achieving the signature lows and highs and stir of emotions the post-rock genre is known for.
Their first track, ‘Runes and Ruins’, starts out with an ambient touch, using wind to set the tone. The the acoustic guitar and percussion start in with a simple pattern. The listener is taken from the intro and into the meat of the song on a wonderful harmonic tap and the playing of the other guitarist starts. There’s a gradual build and just before the two minute mark an awesome change. They are tight in their playing, as brilliantly shown at the 3:17 mark. Intense build right here that continues and then slowly starts to level. The track ends on the sounds of a thunder storm that leads into the next track.
The track, ‘A Reason To Stay Inside’, is actually a first for the band. It’s the first time they’ve used spoken word. It’s a poem written by Josh Therriault and performed by Jean Paul DeRoover. As DeRoover recites, the sounds of the thunderstorm can be heard. It’s a unique and interesting addition to the EP.
Thunder and rain continue into the last track, ‘Another Reason’. I found the first quarter of the track uplifting in it’s playing. Then the mood changes, playing slows and the rain comes through a little more. Crashes of thunder come in at the right time to match the intensity of the guitars and drum playing. Ha, three quarters into it the storm seems to clear and birds start chirping. I couldn’t help to smile at that. It was unexpected. Alas, near the end, the birds stop their chirping and the storm begins again, quietly fading out.
This is a cool EP and a great addition to anyone’s post-rock/math-rock collection. The band is set to release again this coming June. In the meantime, they have started something interesting on their Bandcamp page. Fans can now subscribe to the band.
