Next up in our series of interviews in preparation for Be Prog! My Friend is Jardín de la Croix bassist Nacho Hernandez. The rhythmically complex math rock ensemble are the only Spanish act playing at this year’s festival and are sure to go down well with the musically adventurous crowd.
(((o))): You are going on tour and have to share a bus and billing with another band performing at this year’s Be Prog!, My Friend. Which band do you choose and why?
Nacho: We all are huge fans of Leprous, so, I think is the first band that comes to our mind, despite having so many other great bands we admire in the line-up.
(((o))): What can we expect from your set at Be Prog!, My Friend? Will you be delving into your back catalogue? Do you have new material to play?
Nacho: Since we are currently on tour presenting our new album Circadia, you can expect a bunch of new songs from the new album as well as some from our previous works. We focus our shows on these two albums – we feel they make a very important step ahead for us melodically, so it feels more coherent to stay there.
(((o))): What are your first memories of Barcelona?
Nacho: We always feel very welcome there. So we all remember feeling overwhelmed with the unexpected response of all the people who came to see us first time.
(((o))): Do you consider yourself a prog band? If not, then which genre would you feel more comfortable associating with?
Nacho: We try to stay away from the labelling madness, but we feel like we started like more a prog/math-rock band and lately we have evolved to just and instrumental with influences from this generes and many others, like post rock.
(((o))): What’s the most unusual item on your rider and which band member is responsible for its inclusion?
Nacho: We do not carry nothing particularly strange with us, but lately we have starting using a xylophone. We only use it in a couple of very calm parts, only as an adittional texture. It’s played by our drummer.
Jardín de la Croix play Be Prog! My Friend at 17:15, Saturday 1 July, 2017.
