Saturday Sun’s debut Seagull EP is the perfect soundtrack for these bright spring days, blissfully blending folk with elements of post rock. Ahead of the EP’s release we tried to find out a bit more about the band.
(((o))): How long has the band been together and how did you all meet?
We started playing around spring 2010, we met lurking around the local skatepark and seeing each other at open mics. We met our drummer Luke after an astral storm we found him lying in a wicker basket in the pouring rain down in a crater and it just hit off from there.
(((o))): Where did you get your name from & what does it mean?
(((o))): Describe your sound for us & who would you say were your biggest musical influences?
A tumbledrier of folk, ambient, post rock and alternative rock inspired by the likes of bands like Radiohead, Nick Drake, John Martyn, Oceansize, Sigur Ros.
(((o))): And what about non-musical influences?
Scenic film, people from far and wide, art
(((o))): Music can be a fickle mistress, what is your biggest high & low as a band so far?
he biggest highs are when we have spontaneous jams where everyone bounces off each other it just feels natural and what music should be, it’s pretty hard to re create those situations though. The biggest low was probably a gig we did where it was terrible sound and we had loads of problems and ended up leaving the stage a weee bit early!
(((o))): What one fact about the band do you most want to share with the world?
Our bassist Alec is a dinner lady!
(((o))): The old model of record demo-do gigs-get signed-make millions is pretty broken these days, what’s your plan to deal with this?
Play good music!
(((o))): We journalists like to use easy labels to describe bands, what’s the worst thing you’ve seen yourselves described as?
We get labelled as nu-folk quite often which is quite annoying because live we play lots of soundscape type songs and it narrows us down quite a lot being labelled as nu-folk. Got described as a fresh pint of cider once and that was quite nice.
(((o))): We’re loving what you do but who’s floating your boat right now?
J Tillman because of the input he has put into various different music projects and Radiohead because of the way they are ever changing.
(((o))): What’s up next for you guys?
We got lots of gigs coming up to follow the release of our new e.p including gigs with communion (Ben Lovett from mumford and sons promotion) also the lead track off the E.P is appearing in a U.S horror film in a few months called ‘House at the end of the street’. Other than that we are just going to keep playing.
Saturday Sun’s debut Seagull EP can be pre-ordered now from Bandcamp and is released on April 2nd.
