Imagine the Wildhearts, but with songs about ladyboys, joining a band to score hot girls, and euphemisms for anal sex. Songs that are as catchy as herpes, with the same unwelcome content. There you have Dirt Box Disco. They look like a Pound shop Insane Clown Posse, and have amazingly released four albums so far, according to their press release.
I’m happy to admit that I’m a filthy pinko lefty, so perhaps songs about a hot girl you’ve seen with a nice rack, who happens to have a cock aren’t aimed at me. Maybe there’s a huge audience of teenage boys out there who’ll lap this shit up, but at the age of 34, I feel that perhaps I’m not part of their target market now. There is a strong argument that they’re being sarcastic, but lacking any context means they fall foul of Poe’s law.
It’s a shame really, because the music is decent enough. Nothing groundbreaking, but most of the tracks on Only In It For The Money would sit nicely as Wildhearts album tracks. There’s some great street punk sitting somewhere between Citizen Fish and the Dropkick Murphys, alongside tracks with a lovely ‘50s doo-wop infused melody. If only Dirt Box Disco would grow up a bit and put their writing to good use.
