So, the vinyl is definitely back, and they say that the ‘good old’ cassettes are on their way back, too.

Many might doubt the latter, but Lionmilk, aka Los Angeles musician/composer/producer Moki Kawaguchi certainly doesn’t. You see (and can definitely hear), Kawaguchi recorded his latest album Intergalactic Warp Terminal 222 directly to a single cassette tape.

And if that doesn’t sound like an experiment enough, what Kawaguchi recorded is a line of loops, sketches, improvisations, and voice memos. Bits and pieces? Well, not really, Kawaguchi obviously had a clear mindset and concept that make it all sound like a long-winding… warp. And that warp is not a turbulent, boisterous one, but calm, soothing, and even melancholic at times.

Actually, that was exactly the goal Kawaguchi had in mind as he wanted to produce sounds, and yes, songs, that, as he puts it, provide him with some modicum of solace — “music to feel less whack to.”

It actually all works, whether you take it as a set of single compositions, improvisations, or as one seamless whole. And you can give this album’s ambient concept any other tag you want, post-jazz or post-anything, Lionmilk does it all justice here.
