I was a bit late to the Fang Island party I have to admit, only catching on after their last self-titled album. Better late than never though as Fang Island and “party” go hand in hand.

Since ASIWYFA hooked up with Sargent House I’ve become a bit obsessed with the label. Visiting their website is the musical equivalent of the “kid in a sweet shop” analogy. Fang Island are probably the sweetest act on offer, providing a sugar rush of intoxicating proportions. Listening to ‘Major’ is overpowering, melodic vocals, sharp riffs and melody, I was left feeling an urge to strip off and “go streaking” a la Frank the Tank in Old School.

Its not a gimmick though as much as this sounds fun its delivered with serious skill and talent. The Fangers have upped the ante on ‘Major’, song writing and delivery is more focused and direct making for an even more pleasurable and immediate listen. The first songs released ‘Sisterly’ and ‘Asunder’ provide glorious hooks and could soundtrack any perfect summer.

Musically Fang Island have a pretty unique sound bordering indie-pop and prog/math rock. After gaining praise for their last album, they’ve made a mockery of any “follow up pressure” with ‘Major’ sounding bold and confident. Opener ‘Kindergarten’ revolves around a lush piano riff with melodic guitar work. ‘Seek It Out’, a staple of their live set for some time, serves up riffs with heavenly vocals. Elsewhere ‘Dooney Rock’ is a bluegrass infused instrumental rocker and is one of the year’s most amazing musical experiences. ‘Never Understand’ and ‘Chompers’ are closer to their earlier work and honestly there is little to fault throughout the whole album.

So if you’re fed up of the British “summer” we’re experiencing grab a copy of ‘Major’. For its charm and warmth will beam a bit of sunshine (remember that) back into your life, just put it on repeat and bask in its glory!

Released July 24 2012 on Sargent House.
