The Internet is a wonderful thing. Besides getting links sent to me from various bands, artists and PR companies to let me know about new releases, I also spend quite some time strolling around various websites, blogs et cetera in search of new music and artists. One such artist I recently stumbled upon is Anthony Amorey from Minsk in Belarus. This 22-year old makes music under the name of Difleger, which is basically his one-man band.
What got my attention was the amazing artwork of Trapped in a Wall and Anthony’s description of his music as post-metal/post-rock/ambient. So, having my curiosity tickled, I clicked play on his soundcloud site, which streams this EP, and I was pleasantly surprised, hence this short review of Trapped in a Wall.
Trapped in a Wall consists of 4 average length songs and besides being influenced by post-metal/post-rock, I hear a lot more influences in Difleger’s music. Opening track Suspension Points has plenty of ISIS-inspired sludge, with the guitar almost sounding towards black metal, while towards the end of this track there are some Fear Factory inspired industrial metal elements. The next track Part Of Me builds upon a lot more melodic and atmospheric parts. I get the feeling however that the timing in this track isn’t always perfect, but it doesn’t distract from the rest of the song, partly because of Anthony’s deep grunting vocals, which draw comparisons with Aaron Turner’s vocals in ISIS.
Third track The Wall starts with a quite ambient intro to then slowly build up towards a deep heavy sounding bass, which is being played over some industrial sounding samples. During the final track This Is we are exposed to quite a contrasting piece of instrumental music. This track is more a soundscape, which builds upon layers of ambience, thereby creating an atmospheric dreamy piece of music. While some listeners would probably enjoy this, I think it does not fit in with the rest of this EP in my opinion, and it would be much more interesting as part of a separate EP which focuses more on the ambient musical elements.
Overall, Trapped in a Wall is a reasonable good listen and I think it is an impressive feat knowing all songs were written, played, recorded, mixed and released by just one person.
Trapped in a Wall was released on the 20th of December and you can listen to it here.
