I’m Jody, Manchester based Somerset ex-pat. Decided early on that I was a much better scientist than I was a musician. Still play guitar, mandolin and the odd bit of bass when required, if only as a hobby now.First live gig was Pink Floyd in 1994 and have seen many and varied bands since, everywhere from stadiums, cathedrals and even someone’s sofa and everything from metal bands to a string quartet.A wise man once said to me “There are only two types of music, stuff you like and stuff you don’t.”

Articles by Jody Dunstan

Wolves – Self-Titled

A confident, razor-sharp record that feels both meticulously constructed and dangerously volatile. It’s quite a rare combination, ferocious, fearless, and utterly uncompromising. A band to keep an eye on.

Midas Fall • Overhead, The Albatross • Civil Service – 33 Oldham St, Manchester

Here were three bands all with a slightly different take on the post-rock genre and were fun to see in a tiny, intimate venue. Civil Service are a band developing their craft and one to keep an eye on; Overhead, The Albatross gave a wonderful performance and added a bit of something extra to their recorded work; and Midas Fall rounded things off perfectly.

Conan – Violence Dimension

Fifteen years in, Conan are still raising the stakes of heaviness, layering nuance into the storm without losing their trademark force.

Kurokuma – Of Amber and Sand

Kurokuma are a band that had flown a little under the radar, which is a shame because they are doing something really quite interesting.

Festival Review – ArcTanGent 2024

ArcTanGent 2024 once again proved why it’s a beloved staple in the festival calendar, managing to blend the experimental with the established and offering a platform for a diverse array of artists – from the thunderous and chaotic to the ethereal and introspective. Despite the inevitable rain and the occasional clash of must-see acts, the spirit of discovery and the shared love for the eclectic made for an amazing experience in the Somerset countryside.

DVNE – Voidkind

DVNE manages to be heavy without falling into the usual metal tropes, creating a technically excellent and emotionally resonant work, a worthy additional to the band’s back catalogue.

Esben Willems – Glowing Darkness

While it might not have the heavy, fuzz-drenched doom fans of Monolord might expect, it stands out as an interesting and varied solo project that highlights Esben’s versatility as a musician.

Sugar Horse – Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico

It’s a refreshing change from the endless stream of generic heavy music from bands with scary-sounding names.

Great Falls – Objects Without Pain

It is an emotional record and not an easy listen but is something that is worth perseverance, when you get passed the in your face nature of the music there is a lot more to find.
