The band are called Khünnt, the album is called Khünnt and the song is called ‘Khünnt’… I think it’s fair to say this tape release from Box Records might not be the best present for your Mum or your Nan. This brutal project has been lurking around the underbelly of the North East music scene since 2006 and boasts members of other bands including Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, Blown Out, Bin etc, there could be more but it’s hard to keep up with this lot. Newcastle and its surrounding areas has become the shining light of uncompromising yet innovating rock music over the past few years and this typifies what the hell is going on up there. Absolutely mental shit that would terrify or delight every person on this planet.
This 42 minute + track is hideous, a punishing (and I mean PUNISHING) crunch, over and over and over and over again. The screaming vocals are vicious, like they’ve been recorded by some black metal chap in Finland who lives in a cave in solitude taking shrooms and eating worms. That’s the main story, which might seem tough to get through and that’s right in a way, there’s a certain amount of endurance needed, but weirdly there’s a groovy sensation which takes the edge off. It’s tricky to describe, but there’s a wonderful bounce to it; pure evil, but sprinkled with fun. Imagine Swans and The Body met each other… and REALLY didn’t fucking like each other.
This is a repetitive, pissed off beast, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t the odd surprise. Twisted experiments lurk beneath the surface like a guitar, which you’d swear is a saxophone and the odd change in the rhythm, which really propels this thing into oblivion. Enter with caution, if you commit to this experience there will be moments where you are crying out for a cuddle, moments where you pray to the skies that you black out and moments where you can’t remember if you or anything else exists… anything is possible. ESSENTIAL!!!!!
