Blown Out are proving to be insanely prolific, they only came into existence last year and so far we’ve been given Sun Rot, Solar Queen, Drifting Out Between the Suns, Multiverse Hypnosis and now Jet Black Hallucinations. The Planetary Engineering LP is also coming out in a couple of months, not to mention the various live recordings floating around. They make Circle look like Tool, absolutely fucking ridiculous. If you don’t know Blown Out, they are a psychedelic, instrumental 3 piece heavily inspired by what goes on outside the Earth’s atmosphere. This project features Matt and Johnny from Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs/Khünnt etc making up the rhythm section and Mike from Bong on guitar. Just to confuse you all even more, this was produced by Sam Grant from Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs in Blank Studios and is being released by Golden Mantra, a brand new label founded by Adam from Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs. This introduction has fucking knackered me out, these Jet Black Hallucinations better be worth it.
This is the first Blown Out release that was recorded in a studio and they sound all the better for it. I loved the other releases, but this is much crisper, polished and just feels like everything has been taken up a few gears. On this interstellar outing we’ve been upgraded from cruising the solar system to hopping galaxies. The title track kicks off and it just has a delightful celestial flow to it, I’m not sure how any musicians achieve this, but when engaging you genuinely feel like you’re on a trip, boundaries of reality are broken down and anything is possible. For me, when trying to imagine what a “Jet Black Hallucation” would be like, it vanishes from my brain without a trace and that’s a good way of describing the entire record. Even though it’s fairly chilled, there’s a stronghold of chaos, like your brains are being pulled in different directions and you will never fully understand what’s going on. The guitar work is fucking superb, sounds like aurora borealis dancing through the night, which is nothing short of mind-blowing. It’s on a level with Earthless and Electric Moon, I’m not exaggerating… it’s that fucking good.
The other two tracks are just ridiculous too. If you don’t get a warm and fuzzy feeling when ‘Transgalactic World Eater’ starts firing around the 30 second mark then maybe give up listening to music. It’s a truly absorbing cosmic experience, enhanced by noises that mimic laser beams sailing through the universe. The bassline is magic and the drums are cosmic tidal waves crashing over and over again in the distance. ‘Ultrawave Communications’ is the departing gift, which slows right down and delivers us back to Earth with the delicacy we need. It’s incredible what Blown Out have achieved in such a short space of time, Jet Black Hallucinations has launched them into another dimension and they should be fucking massive. ASTONISHING!
