Ah Bongcauldron – beautiful name, beautiful band – the Leeds trio have been front running contenders for best British band in the stoner scene ever since they dropped their debut self-titled EP onto an unsuspecting Internet back in 2012. An outrageous selection of the finest sludge based RIFFAGE offering such pleasant ditties as ‘Tree Wizard’ and ‘Gimp Jig’, they deemed fit to re-release it in 2014 with the addition of the equally barnstorming track ‘Gauze Rite’ with the stand-alone ode to the Sasquatch released later the same year further sating the appetite while the band hit the road delving there monstrous live show to the masses.
Ok yes I’m biased in their favour, but with good reason. Acid Cattle is a brand new EP of sorts, originally intended as a split release, but the other band pulled out so the ‘cauldron boys decided to release their half anyway. This explains the seemingly measly presence of only two tracks, but £2 for 15 minutes of full blown RIFFmania is not to be sniffed at!
‘Swamp Law’ is the no nonsense installment, a three minute rollicking high energy blast of stoner rock, which still has the nuance to drop in some delightful grooves amongst the blood and thunder. On the contrary ‘Acid Cattle’ is an eleven minute monolith to the majesty of the RIFF beginning at a crawling doom laden pace before picking up the tempo and getting its groove once again to head off into all manner of RIFFtastical directions.
Ultimately if you worship the RIFF you will find yourself worshiping the ‘cauldron and Acid Cattle is another holy slab worthy of tribute.
