You know that certain type of band that starts playing and you are pulled in to a bonkers world where you spend your time guarding your face from people in their 30s/40s landing on it? Where it’s raining booze because every single beer within a five metre radius has been thrown into the air? London’s Luminous Bodies are one of those bands. Boasting members of Terminal Cheesecake, Gum Takes Tooth, Part Chimp and many other great outfits, this five piece have destroyed dozens of venues since their inception 18 months ago and their live shows have quickly gained a reputation for being one of the most entertaining experiences there is. No offense to Luminous Bodies, but they seem like the kind of guys who would just play live for about 10 years without even getting a demo together, so I was fucking chuffed to hear they recorded an actual album. Not only that, it was recorded by Wayne Adams (Shitwife, Death Pedals etc) at Bear Bites Horse Studios and is being released by Box Records, probably the most exciting DIY label in the country.
These guys get compared to Butthole Surfers a lot and you can see why, it’s exhilarating rock music where you feel like just about anything could happen. However, they are a little less experimental than their Texan counterparts. This album features are eight catchy rock ‘n’ roll songs, no fucking weird avant-garde endurance tests. Think an entire album of Butthole Surfers tracks like ‘Birds’ or ‘Who Was In My Room Last Night’, but being played by a circus of British nutters with two drummers. What’s better than that? I’m not going to pull out highlights because the level of song writing throughout is exceptional, I could sing you all the songs word for word right now.
That’s all there is to say really, it’s a fun, catchy, heavy rock album with serious fucking muscle. Raw and chaotic throughout, but always manages to pull itself together to deliver riffs that’ll make even your Nan fist pump until dawn. It’s accessible too, whilst most great underground rock bands are not suitable for the mainstream, this is not true for Luminous Bodies. Every fucker in the country should be listening to this album, they should be on the front of Kerrang, touring America, throwing TVs out of hotel windows… being blasted on every juke box in every rock pub on the planet. That’ll never happen, but this is the most exciting rock music this country has to offer… oh and that last track ‘Om Naman Shivaya’??? FUCKING HELL!
