Few records get me off my cushy seat to start headbanging like crazy even when I’ve got the headphones on. Such is the case with Transcending Obscurity’s latest death metal band from India, named Third Sovereign, and their release, Perversion Swallowing Sanity. This record reminds me of Erosion of Sanity-era Gorguts quite a bit. They are most certainly dissimilar to Gorguts other albums like Obscura, but before Gorguts went nuts on the technicality, they played challenging, but catchy death metal like Third Sovereign does here.
On Perversion Swallowing Sanity, Third Sovereign stop short of modern and mix a little of old Cannibal Corpse in their songwriting. The result is a catchy, headbang-friendly full-length album filled with highlight tracks that has got me itching to write up a review. If death metal of the early Gorguts variety gets you excited, stay titillated for not a moment longer and buy this record. Preview the exclusive stream we have here and bop north to south when the vocalist lets out his signature growl.
The chugging riffs and crazy licks are quite impressive. When the band blast some, it reminds me of early Deicide. The drummer leaves nothing in the studio after recording his drum tracks, and the band clearly loved jamming these songs to life.
The riffs don’t sound as derivative as some death metal acts play, perhaps having borrowed some. These guys just know a good riff and a good jam when they hear it. The mix is just right for the listener to hear everything that’s going on. Having a bit of modernist quality, Perversion Swallowing Sanity will appeal to some modern deathers, but take note that they won’t turn away fans of osdm either. If you like death metal, Perversion Swallowing Sanity rules! There’s simply no better way to put it.
I hear some Lamb of God here too. There’s a fine dose of impressive play and utilization of melody and dynamics. Flowing tempo changes keep up the pace, all packed with great riffs and great transitions.
Perhaps the reason why I don’t prefer to expound further is because I’m having so much fun listening to this. Death metal fans rarely agree on loving the same records. Barring Incantation’s Onward to Golgotha, Dismember’s Like An Ever Flowing Stream, Death’s Scream Bloody Gore, and Morbid Angel’s Altars of Madness, deathers trample on each other’s musical preferences. Make no mistake. This death metal band from India, remember the name Third Sovereign, are up and coming on the international stage, even as they’ve been in existence for years now, so I hope they get the attention they truly deserve.
Fans should support good music regardless of where it’s from, and this band doesn’t beg to differ. Worth your attention, then your admiration, support this album. Then, turn your living room into the scene of a natural disaster.
