Scottish indie-rockers We Were Promised Jetpacks present their third-studio album ‘Unravelling’. The latest effort features the band at the forefront of the indie-rock genre, showcasing a phenomenal style that builds upon everything else the band has previous released and established thus far. There’s an incredible energy to the album, which seems unmatched in comparison to so much else being currently released within this genre. We Were Promised Jetpacks seem to be pushing themselves forward at an incredible pace, demonstrating some incredible creative ideas, showcasing themselves as one of the strongest indie-rock bands in the current scene.

‘Unravelling’ sees We Were Promised Jetpacks offering up, once again, an energetic selection of rock tunes. It’s quintessentially what one would expect from the Scottish rockers, though there seems to be a lot more going on underneath the layers of crunchy guitar and accented-vocals. We Were Promised Jetpacks seem to have injected much more into their music, giving it much more maturity and gravitas than their previous efforts. The album features a phenomenal selection of tracks, each one showcasing something a little different. Each track contributes wonderfully towards the overall album, giving it a sense of being a true-album package, where one can enjoy the tracks separately by themselves, or together in context of the album.

We Were Promised Jetpacks seem to be making great strides in their music, developing their sound in a very worthwhile and rather impressive way. Their latest album feels like a very worthy and strong album effort, perhaps much more so than its predecessor ‘In The Pit Of The Stomach’. Many of the tracks offer an incredible amount to not just the album itself, but to the band’s repertoire, showing that they’re capable of much more than what their raw indie-rock sound suggests. At times, ‘Unravelling’ does delve into some questionable moments, where certain creative ideas result in some odd-sounding and unusual songs. It’s certainly interesting to see the band trying some new techniques and ideas, though it’s clear that not all of their new ideas are so clearly refined.

Fans of the band will find a great amount to enjoy on ‘Unravelling’, which sees the band progressing their already-existing sound without comprising anything. Everything just feels like one great step up for the band, who show us what is actually great about the indie-rock genre, and how it can be expressed in a creative, enjoyable and fun way.  We Were Promised Jetpacks have presented another great chapter in their ever growing repertoire, giving their music the same impact and importance as other Scottish rock bands such as The Twilight Sad, Arab Strap and Biffy Clyro.
