D-beat, grindcore, extreme metal. You can call Carcass  whatever you want, but they will always be pioneers of their sound. I have the pleasure of reviewing their newest EP Surgical Remission/Surplus Steel. This is a collection of previously unreleased and hard-to-find tracks, so some of you out there might have heard these songs before. I personally am not very into re-releases or a collection of hard-to-find tracks because if I were a die-hard fan, I would have them already. But, these songs just make sense together. And it’s awesome that they came together and released these songs and these versions, because some fans might not of heard them before. From their record label:

“Well, let’s call this tying up loose ends,” commented Carcass front man Jeff Walker.

“We thought we’d make all the tracks available from the Surgical Steel album session on an EP… just in case you bought the jewel case version, didn’t buy the digipak, didn’t buy the Japanese import, or maybe you never bought the Decibel magazine issue with the flexi disc? Well, here you go; ALL the songs on one disc along with an previously unreleased track. Even Trevor Strnad’s arm makes a guest appearance! Enjoy.”

I have a lot of respect for doing that. There are so many people out there that are huge fans of Carcass and have a ton of respect for them. This will only make their appreciation stronger. I hope that other bands and musicians out there take note.

There is no doubt that Surgical Steel (released in 2013) was an incredible comeback album and they really did it justice. These songs only add to the same excitement and prolong the experience. They even have a reprise of 1985, which I like better than the Surgical Steel version myself. On the same token, they have changed over the years, changing from an intense d-beat/grindcore sound to a more “extreme metal”. I would keep that in mind and if you choose to only listen to the earlier records, consider this is a great new beginning for them.

For the die-hard fan, this release is a must. For the general fan of Carcass, this is definitely worth checking out and playing it right after Surgical Steel.
