(((o))): So, first and foremost, who are Waylayers and what are your musical backgrounds?
I am Harry. The others are Dave and Joe. I don’t know if we have any backgrounds as such. Hopefully we'll have foregrounds.
(((o))): How did the band come together?
Through the whimsy of a music ad in Rough Trade East on Brick Lane.
(((o))): Please describe your sound in the form of either a haiku, a rhyming couplet or, if you are feeling massively ambitious, an acrostic...
Walking into a dream
All of us were musicians
Yelling with joy and passion
Like lions roaring for the first time
Amongst a sea of stars
Yearning to voyage far
Especially to the top of the tallest mountain
Reverb echoing across the land
So that we can call this place our own
(((o))): Has your local music scene had any impact on you as a band?
Not at all. Our local music scene in Dalston tends to consist of trendies wearing fake moustaches and berets.
(((o))): Your new EP is coming out soon. Tell us a little bit about it...
It’s 6 tracks. It’s about love, loss of life, feeling alive, living for life. It can also mean different things at different times of the day I think. We love melodies. It’s full of synths and soaring guitars. We hope it’s the game changer release.
(((o))): What do you think is the most difficult challenge facing new bands starting out in the music industry today?
Getting their house in order and wading through the plethora of tosspots until you find the decent folk. It's about building the proper team and telling people you don’t like to fuck off.
(((o))): Every band has different aims. What would have to happen for Waylayers to make you feel that you’d “made it”, so to speak?
Having our grannies like it and people from Manchester. We just want to have fans who really like what we do and resonate with them. It’s all about the fans. We’re like Pret A Manger pop music as opposed to McDonald's pop music. Slightly healthier, and not so full of saturate fats. That's a terrible analogy, sorry.
(((o))): Why do you keep interrupting me all the time?
Shut up. I was talking.
(((o))): We have another column called Echoes of the Past in which we get people to write about albums that have particularly influenced them. What would you guys choose to write about in that column?
Well I can’t speak for the others but for me it would be one of The Beatles’ ‘Revolver’, or Cocteau Twins’ ‘Heaven or Las Vegas’ or The Verve’s ‘Northern Soul’.
(((o))): This is ostensibly a column for introducing new bands. Any suggestions as to who we ought to include in the near future?
MØ - ‘Maiden’ is a great new track I’ve discovered. I’m sure you all already have. Mademoiselle Mademoiselle are pretty great new band also.
(((o))): What are the band’s plans for the near future?
A string of festival dates this summer including Isle of Wight, Kendal Calling, Wickerman, Beach Break and loads more actually! We're headlining Koko on 14 June which we are very excited about. As usual we're writing lots more music. Oh and there's a film maker following us around for a documentary about us - which is disconcerting but fun. Basically we're keeping calm and carrying on!
