A couple of weeks ago I received a vinyl copy of Flexx Bronco’s latest album Volume 3. I had never heard of these guys before, but I was instantly intrigued by the cover image of a man wearing some kinky bondage outfit and a leather mask, standing in a desert of some kind, or at least somewhere sunny. And I was told that apparently if you like Peter Pan Speedrock, you’ll probably like Flexx Bronco. Other comparisons the press contact mentioned are Motörhead and The Hellacopters, so I’m preparing myself for a slab of good ol’ dirty rock ‘n roll.
And this is exactly what we get over the course of the 12 songs which make up Volume 3, with added levels of punk rock included as well. These guys obviously like their riffs, their up tempo drums, their melodic solos and choruses that the whole band can sing along to out loud, which sets them up for some great audience participation during live shows!
The first couple of tracks are all up tempo punk rock ‘n roll, before things slow down a bit starting with the 5th track ‘Deadman2015’, which is with its 5 minutes length also the longest track on the album. The next track ‘Filthy’s Lullabye’ stays in the slower, riffing rock areas, reminding me at parts of Guns N’ Roses, whereas ‘Heart On The Floor’ is the band’s slow waltzing rock ballad, though the final album track provides an alternative version if ballads aren’t your thing.
Things switch back to faster riffing rock ‘n roll with track number 8, ‘Death Baby’, which continues during the remainder of the album, with track ‘Big Sky Fire’ sounding the most punk rock of them all.
All in all, Volume 3 isn’t a bad album. Not an outstanding piece of work, but certainly enjoyable for what it is. If you like catchy, punky rock songs with plenty of riffs and sing-a-longs, then Flexx Bronco’s Volume 3 is definitely made for you.
Oh and check out the amazing spindle-hole placement on the record!
