Though sadly unnoticed and uncredited as one of last years’ finest releases from the indie camp, AL – ‘AN ! by Parisian musical collective Oiseaux Tempête will have no doubt set its mark on its listeners who will have caught a glance of the bands’ intense, lively performances across Europe, Canada and the Middle-East last year. Along with its predecessor, the ambitiously crafted record, recorded between Europe and the Middle-East back in 2016, pushes the collective’s combination of post-rock, kraut-rock, experimental music and Arabic Music to ecstatic heights, reaching far into radically new musical perspectives through their masterful improvisational craft and group synergy seeping into each track.
The music of Oiseaux-Tempête is filled with the spontaneity and vivacity of its live performance, bustling with life that cannot be replicated. As the band’s latest release, TARAB sees the expansion of the bands’ repertoire, reinvigorated and rearranged to create an entirely new musical experience, with the addition of entirely new tour-borne compositions. As pieces born from improvisation, the songs on TARAB play with familiar tracks but don’t hesitate to shift shape, betraying expectations through repetition and off-script passages.
As such, TARAB is a brilliant live album to follow up the release of AL-‘AN! and a fascinating example of what Oiseaux-Tempête has to offer as a live musical collective.
