Named after one of the largest volcanic eruptions of the 20th Century, this November, Alex Stjernfeldt’s Novarupta will again join forces with Suicide Records for the release of Marine Snow; the second instalment in a series of four albums that conceptually focuses on the elemental forces of Fire, Water, Air and Earth.
Emerging from a passage of fire onto the ocean floor below, Marine Snow immerses listeners in a sea of blackened sludge, progressive metal and monochromatic psychedelia. As best exemplified on newest single, ‘Every Shade of Water’, which pressurises the senses with bottomless riffs and sublime vocals from Besvärjelsen’s Lea Amling and Skraeckoedlan’s Robert Lamu. Two distinguished voices amongst many on an album which features vocals by Josh Graham (A Storm of Light/Red Sparowes), Mike Paparo (Inter Arma), Arvid Hällagård (Greenleaf) and Martin Persner (Ghost/Magna Carta Cartel).
Alex Stjernfeldt writes: “The music for ‘Every Shade of Water’ was created in a stream of consciousness. I was in a really dark and destructive place when I wrote and recorded it. Somehow, I managed to tap into those emotions and put them into something creative. It took a life of its own and suddenly it was done. Both Lea and Robert truly brought their A-game and they understood the mood of the song. When their voices came together, some sort of black magic happened. Like something calling you from the deep, a need to leave the comfort of the land and head into the ocean.”
Novarupta’s Marine Snow is released worldwide on 13 November on Suicide Records and can be pre-ordered on Bandcamp
