How does a connection between electro-pop with the best aspects of (smooth) jazz work for you?
While it might sound like a possibility for a wreck on paper, it can be quite intriguing if carried out the way London-based multidisciplinary artist and producer Laura Misch does on her formal album debut Sample The Sky.
Formal debut, since Misch had two previous EP’s (Playground and Lonely City released in 2017 and 2019, respectively). While these two had more of a home-produced brew, here Misch uses all a full-blown studio can offer to present her capabilities as a songwriter, producer, vocalist, and instrumentalist, particularly her delicate saxophone playing.
Misch actually started out as an electronic music producer. Still, she seems to have enough experience there, to use electronics just as an element in her music, the one that doesn’t dominate but accentuates her quality songwriting.
It is the type of songwriting that references everything from pop to jazz and even experimental electronic purveyors like Daphne Oram and Pauline Oliveros.
Essentially, Misch has come up with an adventurous and at the same time ear-pleasing album, at the same time raising expectations from her further musical ventures.
