When I go for a walk in my local woodland, I usually pick out an album to listen to. The one I picked on this early morning walk was the debut offering from Greek post-metallers Salos – A Slaughter for the Empire. This ended up being the perfect accompaniment for my stomp around in nature
Hailing from Kalamata Greece, the instrumental duo has created something quite special. A quick Google translation of “Salos” signified a state of disturbance and the heavy riffs on this offering evoke imagery of a boiling sea or crumbling landscape.
Recorded at Eightyard Studios by Chris Vlachos and mixed and mastered by Steve Lado the record moves between epic heaviness and beautiful soundscapes.
Opener ‘Hvitserkur’ is a quiet piece which eases the listener in gently to lead single ‘Leviathan’. Released in December 2025 this track set the tone for what was to come in this release. Starting with minimal guitars and blasting into full on riffs bringing imagery of the serpent rushing to the surface and breaching the water.
‘Slaughter’ is a punch of brutal heaviness and blast beats which perfectly holds the album mid-way through the listen. The nine minute epic ‘We deteriorate, Let’s Disintegrate’ is a cathartic slab of post-metal goodness which leads perfectly into the ambient closure of ‘Nahtaivel’
Overall, A Slaughter for the Empire feels less like a simple collection of tracks and more like a fully formed narrative—one that moves from calm reflection to towering riffs and finally into atmospheric stillness. Salos have crafted an immersive debut that captures both the violence and beauty of the natural world.
