Label: Refractions

Jan Nemeček is a Serbian composer, electronic musician, and software developer from Belgrade and has been releasing music for some 18 years now (since 2005).

As somebody who is well-versed in electronics, Nemeček has been using a wide range of sound-generating tools, including neural networks, analog synthesisers, and granular synthesis.

On his latest release Dissolved, along with his array of electronics, Nemeček also invited help from a number of collaborators who also play a pontic lyre and prepared piano. With some of the parts here being recorded live in the studio.

Yet, the key here is not just the use of a wide array of instruments, electronics (and samples), and live studio recordings, but the high-quality of sounds that Nemeček and his collaborators are able to come up with – a series of deep, often sub-sonic ambients that also resort to acoustic piano sounds and that can effectively be compared to some of William Basinski’s work.

Very often on the album, the music takes deep, almost guttural tonalities like on ‘Organ Dissolution’ that give another meaning to the phrase ‘dark overtones’.

Still, beyond comparisons with Basinski, and other similar artists, Nemeček has a very personal, individualistic sound, that goes beyond what you can expect from ambient music.
