Built for the Future’s latest chapter in their Orwellian saga, 2084 Empire, is nothing short of a dark, dystopian triumph. This San Antonio progressive-rock force, founded in 2014 by longtime collaborators Patric Farrell and Kenny Bissett, has always blended the atmospheric DNA of Tears for Fears, Rush, and Pink Floyd. But here, they abandon nostalgia and plunge headfirst into something heavier, darker, and far more ominous.

This 2‑CD epic expands the Orwellian universe they began exploring on 2084 Heretic (2023), pushing the narrative into a post‑apocalyptic labyrinth of collapsing empires, mechanised surveillance, and parallel realities. It’s their most ambitious and musically demanding work to date, a fourth album forged with precision, fury, and imagination.

The opening track, ‘2084’, erupts like a warning siren. A cathedral-sized Mellotron haze hangs in the air as the band delivers a grim sermon to a captive congregation. The mood evokes Bauhaus, Peter Hammill, and the bleak whisper of Nirvana’s ‘Something in the Way’. There is no escape — only revelation.

 

Where ‘2084’ establishes the dread, ‘Propaganda’ accelerates it. Farrell’s bass becomes a marching engine of authoritarian rhythm, locking in with Bissett, Peter Fithian, and Lalo Herrera as they charge into the neon-lit synth‑wave of ‘The Empire State’. Fans of Rush’s Signals and Grace Under Pressure will feel the unmistakable resonance.

Then comes ‘Airstrip One’, the album’s turning point. It drops the listener into a Gotham‑like metropolis on the brink of collapse, a city ruled by corruption, fear, and the slow erosion of hope. Mellotron layers burn like wildfire as the track paints a cinematic descent into chaos.

‘The Brotherhood’ shifts the mood again, opening with rain‑soaked guitar lines and Rhodes‑like textures that ask a simple but devastating question: Where do we go from here?

The answer arrives in the colossal, 25‑minute centrepiece, ‘Oceania’. This is the band at their most fearless. Clock‑ticking percussion, orchestral guitar surges, and Mellotron storms guide the listener into the Ministry of Love, a cultish nightmare echoing the psychological terror of Jonestown. The piece mutates, collapses, rebuilds, and spirals into orbit, showcasing Built for the Future’s mastery of Texas prog at its most inventive.

Not every citizen is a hero. Not every leader is a saviour. And in 2084 Empire, the greatest threat comes from within.

This album demands repeat listens — not because it’s difficult, but because it’s alive, pulsing with detail, danger, and vision. What a ride it is.
