So, what is a blockhead or in this case BLOCKHEADS? Well, you see there are these French lads who make noise (that’s right, not music). But what does it sound like? If I had to explain… imagine someone had money to build a massive Slush Puppy machine that goes faster than the Large Hadron Collider, but fill this slush puppy machine with glass and marbles instead of icy rainbow flavoured goodness. That is the most accurate description I can come up with to describe French grindcore outfit BLOCKHEADS.
BLOCKHEADS are relatively well known amongst lovers of all things fast and noisy. Yet still not as known as their Swedish and American counterparts, who started around the same time. The band has been blasting away and shattering eardrums since ’92 producing their forth full-length album titled The World is Dead. The term “full-length” being a relative term here.
The World Is Dead is one of the first releases in this new year of 2013, but is it fast, furious and particularly noisy? Check, check and double check. It has everything you want from a grindcore record: inane noise, excellent face shattering riffs and artillery barrage like intensity on the hell hammers. The World is Dead has that old approach of play fast or don’t, which makes it such a excellent record. It also has excellent breakdowns which allows you to lose your head too.
The album itself contains track titles such as “Deindividualized”, “Media Warfare”, “Already Slaves” and “Follow the Bombs”, which does give one a rough idea what the lyrics are about if the album title isn’t enough of a hint.
All and all The World is Dead is an amazing album with all the elements of a excellent grindcore album. If you’re a fan of grindcore, crustcore and or powerviolence I would recommend this album.
Definitely for fans of Insect Warfare, Chiens, Nasum, Gadget, Phobia, and Wormrot.
The World Is Dead will be released on January 21st in the UK and January 22nd in the US through Relapse Records.
