Peacemake
Out now through Distortion Plus Records (digital) and BigCartel (CD)
Peacemaker came to be when a few lads grew tired of playing death metal and wanted to spread the DOOM. And they have absolutely succeeded. You won’t find much happiness on Cult .45 that’s for sure. But here’s what you will find…
Tracks like ‘Follow the Rats’ and ‘Journey of the Faithful’ have a special southern charm to them. Odd considering the band are from London, but they embrace the doom spirit in a Cathedral sense. Not afraid to speed up on occasion and throw in classy solos, acoustic interludes, and even a spot of cowbell on ‘Sorrow Trip’. They never lose the doom spirit though. Even in some lighter moments they keep the drab and sorrow on full display. Interlude ‘Mane of Serpent’ is a hazy track that has you at a standstill. The acoustic guitars, wavy dessert guitars in the back and a mellotron haunting you, they all sound somber.
Lyrically there’s no flowers and sunshine. Words of destruction, melancholy, struggling and the like, all pulled off by vocalist Al Osta. He proves his versatility by crooning and using a raspy “smoked to many cigarettes” voice. His bandmates are all amazing as well. Listen to ‘Soul Cheater’ and try and tell me this band doesn't have it locked down. The drums are rough and tumble, the guitars soulful and jamming. Bass plodding away and vocals completely in rhythm. Doom doesn't have to be slow to be effective. Even Sabbath sped up now and then. Peacemaker embraces all before them and put their awesome, dirty spin on it.
Cult .45 is a great album, no matter what your feelings on how doom needs to be done. Peacemaker have made a dirty and exciting album that packs punch and doesn't overstay its welcome. What the hell else do you need?!?!?!?
You can pick up the drab that is Cult .45 through Distortion Plus Records, either digitally through their Bandcamp, or on CD through the band's BigCartel page. Show these London boys some love, this albums a good listen and worth throwing the horns in support or buying them a beer when you see them live.
Support artists and bands you enjoy.
HAIL!!!
