For those about to RIFF we salute you!
The Team Rock organised ‘Lords of the Riff’ tour rolls into town for the second time this year and although the bands on the bill aren’t the biggest in the scene they certainly pack a punch when it comes to the important act of RIFF worship.
Fun Fact 1: Everyone loves a bit of Clutch worship.
All three bands on the bill are on a rotation throughout the tour. Given the unenviable task of opening tonight’s show at 7:30pm are Maryland’s second favorite sons Lionize, but previous appearances on tour with Clutch and Temples Festival have ensured a decent and receptive turnout early doors. And for good reason, as their keyboard laden bluesier take on the Clutch template is finely honed. Front man Nate Bergman has been taking notes from one Mr Fallon with an impressively commanding stage presence that even allows them to throw in a spot of reggae without complaints.
Fun Fact 2: Everyone loves free balloons.
The tour is also sponsored by Kraken Rum; so after Lionize finish there set, Kraken branded balloons are dispersed amongst the crowd – cue impromptu games of balloon volleyball which lightens the mood significantly (as only balloons can).
Next to step up to the plate is Greek rockers Planet Of Zeus, who are an inspired choice of replacement for the now defunct Anti-Mortem. Admittedly I’m biased as I’ve been a huge fan since they tore the Black Heart a new one at Desertfest 2013 – and tonight is no exception. Their take on the heavier end of the Clutch spectrum delivers monstrous RIFFS and humongous grooves by the bucket load, from the hard hitting ‘Leftovers’ to the funkier ‘The Great Dandalos’, causing all manner of shapes to be thrown in the front rows.
Fun Fact 3: Everyone loves free alcohol.
Not content with giving away free balloons, the girls from Kraken (aided by a deep sea diver) also unleash free shots of rum… winning!
Anyway, Los Angeles rockers Kyng have drawn the short straw of having to headline tonight, and just about get away with it. Their Black Sabbath by way of Alice in Chains mash up unfortunately lacks in swagger or charisma. However, they make up for it in volume and determination, along with a well-timed incendiary cover of Van Halen’s ‘Hot for Teacher’, which certainly re-energises the crowd.
Fun Fact 4: What’s a sign of a smashing gig? Over the top alcohol fueled merchandise spending spree is usually a good one!
