Bristolian three piece Nasty Little Lonely – purveyors of “Industrial post-punk noisy stuff” – released their debut E.P. ‘Son Of The Flies’ back in February and its hybrid mix of electro funk and industrial abrasiveness won them many fans including yours truly.
Not ones to waste time they are back with a second E.P. ‘Bad Jack & Other Stories’ that is another short and sharp four track affair as the titular ‘Bad Jack’ begins proceedings (via a clanging off kilter intro) where ‘Son Of Flies’ left off with bouncing bass lines, post punk guitars and sultry female vocals, although this is for shorter bursts as NLN have other ideas to explore as the track delves into extended atmospheric break downs that are provided with a dramatic sense of menace ably assisted by the bigger and darker production.
This is brought over to ‘Throw Me A Bone’, which begins with a creeping bassline and vocalist Charlie B quoting 3 little pigs that is interrupted by pounding industrial rhythm with a pulsing, almost theme park atmospheric undercurrent. The cleaner vocals add to prevalent latent tension as the track continuously picks up speed until suddenly stopping.
‘Blood On The Floor’ has a more chilled out vibe as rhythmic drumming and background swooshes are joined by groove laden bass lines and floaty echoes guitar lines and vocals for a very interesting change of pace before the aptly titled ‘Machinery’ brings back the darkness with stabbing jagged industrial rhythms that are once again nicely juxtaposed by the melodic vocal delivery and we are even treated to a bass solo into the finale.
An impressive step forward that manages to incorporates new ideas without sacrificing their base sound.
