Germany’s The Fog is an intense three-piece unit that plays some very good doom/death metal. Their debut full-length, Perpetual Blackness, is released via the very dependable Memento Mori Records.
The Fog down pick away to destruction on Perpetual Blackness. The vocals on here are quite intense. The occasional uppicks and transition riffs scale up the fretboard punk-style. I’d perhaps describe their style as venerable doom act Coffins meets Finland’s underrated Lantern in a back alley brawl. If you’re a fan of doom/death, this is one record to check out. Thankfully, the folks at Transcending Obscurity have arranged this première with Echoes and Dust for your listening pleasure.
All tracks here feature some interesting vocal roars and rasps. They don’t just grunt away like Coffins tends to do. The lyrics are foretelling of darkness and despair, the prelude to death and destruction. The imminent destruction of your speakers is at-hand – just take a listen to this album.
The tracks often hover at mid-tempo to slow. Occasionally the double-kicks hit frenetic pace, and the riffs are catchy on this beast. The slower riffs call to mind Finnish doom/death metal similar to Krypts’ Unending Degradation masterpiece. Memento Mori scores on another lethal dose of death metal on this release.
All intense, all old-school, no triggers, no sweep picked leads. This seven track rager hits like a knuckle-duster to the stomach. I can’t say enough about this promising band. The Fog feature a full-length album’s worth of surefire death/doom hits. No leads on here. There’s a dearth of headbang-friendly riffs. The riffs aren’t groovy like Druid Lord’s style tends to sound like, but this record occasionally recalls a punk-influence to this style and the chord transitions are fantastic. With so many cool rhythm guitar riffs going on, why solo at all? Perpetual Blackness rules!
