Sometimes I get an itch to stem away from the normal metal which I usually listen to. I always think of the time when I heard that Fenriz of Darkthrone would listen to techno. He even DJ’s sometimes on his radio show. As a kid I remember hearing the sounds of Nine Inch Nails, Skinny Puppy, and the harsh industrial sounds of KMFDM. So of course I am drawn to the sounds of darksynth and let me tell you, some electronic music can be just as kvlt as the grimiest black metal.
I have been a fan of Perturbator since hearing the ominous track ‘Humans Are Such Easy Prey’. Listening to that brought back memories of the harshness of 90’s industrial music. Sounds which were mechanical, dangerous, cold, unforgiving, and gruesome. Sounds which were the soundtracks to the grimiest snuff films and deviant dungeons.
The fourth album from Perturbator, entitled The Uncanny Valley, is the continuation of the epic story told in their last albums. The battle between humans and a dark cult of machines. This album is in the same tone as their previous albums. Bringing dark 80’s electronic synths, slow echoing saxophone solos, and fading arcs of bit crushed soundscapes. Perturbator’s albums are the 80’s post-apocalyptic movie that should exist. Really! They are like if Blade Runner, Miami Vice, and Drive where mashed up into an anti-heroic tale of neon and flame.
The Uncanny Valley is everything you need to usher in the future rise of the machine death cult. Its sounds are chilling, gloomy, and cut through your soul with a robotic surgical precision. This release really makes me want to listen to the older albums in order, to get the full experience of the mechanical overtaking of the human world.
Usually electronic music is kind of repetitive, it’s dull, and really has a soulless vibe which is just around to make kids on chemicals dance around. But Perturbator takes hard synth back to the days when it was dangerous, when it had a demonic soul to crush your ears and erotically intoxicate your spirit. True Kvlt Electronic!
