Today we premiere the track ‘Breathers” by LA-based three-piece indie group Rubaiyat. It is the fifth track from their newest album O. The band is made up of Joel Heinrich (guitar, vocals), Ian Earley(bass) and Matt Camgros (drums). Their band name means a “collection of ruba’i’ (4 line poems)”. On this track, you’ll also hear haunting synth layers played by Anina Denove.
In just under three minutes, ‘Breathers’ sends the listener on quite an emotional journey, packed with many incredible twists and turns. The lyrics and instrumentation converge into this fluid union. The vocals, lyrics, bassline, guitar riff, drumming and synth layers are haunting. The track starts at a quick tempo then just past the minute mark, the tempo slows and at just under the two-minute mark, the bridge sends a sonic boom straight to the heart.
Joel Heinrich explains that “Breathers is about getting caught up in an abusive relationship where you aren’t valued and you struggle against the perpetuation of your own self-deprecating negativity. There’s always a part of me that can’t help but keep loving someone I’ve loved before- no matter the state of our current relationship or how they’ve treated me in the past. There’s a fine line, however, between acknowledging some abuse or developing a kind of Stockholm syndrome. It can be hard to see someone in a new light when you’ve known them another way for so long.”
