With a blistering debut EP which came out of nowhere in 2022 and rightly got followed by a Trepanation Recordings physical release, 2023 sees a new two track EP from Glasgow based post-metal sextet Void of Light. Enshroud shows a real progression on the promise of the self-titled debut with two tracks stretching to 19 minutes which swirl with influences of genre big guns like Neurosis and Cult of Luna whilst offering enthralling insights into further hope for more from this excellent band.
‘Gild’ is undoubtedly my favourite so far from the band and the opening rattle of drums marches in an urgency with a guitar tone which stretches above any basic genre comparison. It offers a real window into a band expanding on its earlier three tracks and feels very exciting if this is the quality that can continue to be produced. ‘Deign Torrent’ comes in at the polar opposite of ‘Gild’, it is a real slow burner which more predominantly features a mildly husky clean lingering vocal. Whilst expecting a grand crescendo the song manages to slowly release through its journey from that quieter beginning and gives a real presence through its whole 10 minutes which is quite the feat.
For only having two tracks Enshroud actually fills me with a great level of excitement. This isn’t just to fill a gap but shows a band building on its already sturdy foundations. Both tracks have an overriding impression of a mighty upward trajectory for Void of Light who are carving their own sound and place in the UK post-metal scene. I can’t wait for more.
Catch Void of Light as they embark on a UK tour with Codespeaker in April: 11/04 London, 12/04 Brighton, 13/04 Leeds, 14/04 Newcastle, 15/04 Edinburgh.
