Speedboat by Diary

Release date: September 20, 2024
Label: Kanine Records

Diary is a noisy Brooklyn group that channels shoegaze and grunge through a psych filter. You might hear glimmers of Sonic Youth or BJM in their sound, yet their big-hearted pop tunes about living in New York City make them a standout.

Opening track ‘Sunday’s Shadow’ has all the requisite hazy layers that signify dream pop, but what emerges instead is more of a Britpop sensibility. The band has a keen sense of melody and what works in an indie rock structure. Fun stuff! ‘I Wanna Watch the Game’ has an instantly familiar riff with a Velvets vibe around the vocals, and then the fuzz kicks in and elevates it yet again. ‘Brush Pile’ rockets into full drive, a bit of garage rock which once again evokes Lou Reed (at least in my mind). The final ‘Acid Coffin’ is burbling psych pop that meanders into an inviting chorus.

If this EP is any indication, this is a band to watch!
