One of the more glorious aspects of the 90’s was the complete disregard for musical boundaries and no-one epitomises this more than those rather splendid Super Furry Animals. Purveyors of indie psych of the highest order but peek below the service (or indeed attend one of their gigs) and you will no doubt be blasted by a hard dose of techno beats. It’s in the Welsh blood you see. Stoned rock stars by day, full on head rattling ravers at night. We’re all like that, honest. It’s why we live on mountains.
Das Koolies are Super Furry Animals without the singer. Whether that changes and they revert to Super Furry Animals OK, who knows, and based on this second album who really cares anymore? Well, we all care but the glory is as well as Gruff’s continuing adventures we now get glorious sunny disco techno (or whatever you want to call it). It’s simply uplifting music of the highest order and quite frankly album of the year material.
Minimalist, turning to full on disco rampage, there’s nothing quite like this out there. Never taking itself too seriously, you can hear the classic Super Furry Animals gene throughout, but this is also something different. It’s dance music made for driving to. It’s music to do the housework to. I dare say it plays out rather magnificently in the live show too but the beauty is that its very homeliness makes it feel like an every day moment. Totally at ease, in complete control, and knowing exactly when to hit those giddy heights of joy. That’s the word to sum up both this album and band…joy. Complete and utter joy. Music to dance to forever. Das Koolies OK.
