So here’s something different for you, a stoner/fuzz/doom band making some mighty fine desert music, but hailing from Sweden. Full of peyote fuelled riffs, and obligatory Black Sabbath worship, its absolutely nothing new but its also somewhat rather a blast.
Taking time to get going with the slowburning ‘The Church Of Starry Wisdom’, all full of fuzzy riffs and stoned vocals, its obvious we have been here before but the aplomb in which it is delivered does make them stand out from the flock. The riffs are pure Supernaut era Sabbath, accentuated even further on the trippy ‘Metatron’. It does get a bit overwhelming by ‘Cloudrider’, if we are being honest, but the limitations of such music does mean its often difficult to get away from your influences.
‘Return To Babylon’ offers some crunching riffs which heighten the doom aspect over the psychedelic, which makes for a refreshing change. It’s almost proto-doom though, and you have to keep reminding yourself that these guys are from Sweden and not some hot, sun-baked desert. The fever they evoke is fantastic, and one can only assume even better under the influence of some high grade weed.
For those craving a bit of Sabbath worship then you will find much to enjoy in this album. By knowing its limitations and being really good at what they do, they somehow stand apart from many of a similar ilk. You can sense that they enjoy playing the music, and this makes for a very enjoyable listen on our parts.
