Taking the so-called cinematic route, or in more detail, being inspired by film scores, library music and so-called exotica for good measure to create music that is not actually tied to any existing film as such is a route many current artists have taken.
Doing that actually requires not just love and sympathy for such sounds, from mid-sixties on, but detailed research, crate-digging to find the exact inspiration and route you are willing to take. Of course, near to perfect execution is a must because such music in its prime was performed by usually the most experienced professionals.
Greek multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Raphael Meleteas entered the recording of his new album Something Else constructed on the above premises seemingly without fear, adding another twist to the concept – the album was entirely written, arranged, performed, recorded and mixed by Meleteas.
It took him six months in 2025 to compose and capture the songs on the album simultaneously, since he wanted to let each piece of music here naturally through the recording process.
Even though Meleteas didn’t do any editing of the recordings, any possible glitches and imperfections are either inaudible or blend in freely with the music itself, giving it exactly that naturally feel he was going for.
Actually, Meleteas’ understanding and obvious knowledge of seventies soundtrack and library music in particular is exemplary, making it sound all his own. Bob James, Pierro Piccioni, Arthur Verocai and quite a few other artists would be proud of Meleteas.
