About 2 years ago, we were left waiting for more with Follow Me As A Ghost, the brilliant debut EP by Sisters Of…, a fairly unknown band hailing from St. Joseph, Missouri. The duo are now back with The Serpent, The Angel, The Adversary, their first full length release.
The album is composed by two distinct parts. The first part being the heavy and sludgy and the second being the more melodic and moody. In the end, both blend so perfectly.
Things start off in a majestic manner with ‘The Serpent’. Soothing female vocals lead the way to the heavy and upbeat structure of this song. Some screaming vocals are heard (these were only included on this track).
Sisters Of… also display their “stonerish” and massive riffing. We’re constantly smacked in the face by the heaving hitting, chuggy and groovy riffs. Some parts almost remind me of a more simplified (and this is not a bad thing) version of Russian Circles (and maybe a pinch of Pelican).
However, there is much more to this record that that. It’s not just the riffs. It’s the immense drums, the ambient passages, the melodies, the story each song tells us.
The second part, which for me kicks off with ‘Germana Cele’, contains some of the most beautiful and intense guitar work I’ve heard in records of this genre. The last track, ‘Leva In Mare’, is perhaps the most “post-rock” moment and a pretty classy way to end things.
Sisters Of… have indeed stepped up to the plate in a time where many claim the post-rock/metal genre is overcrowded and oversaturated. They have presented us with something that is not innovative, but is fresh and expertly crafted. I cannot ask for more.
