Through one of my fellow Echoes & Dust reviewers, who is based in the land Down Under, I got asked to review this new release by The Reverend Jesse Custer. Not heard of these guys before I quickly found out that this band is based in Australia’s capital Canberra.
Now, I’ve never been in Canberra myself, but the stories I’ve heard aren’t very positive and my impression is that Canberra can be a bit dull in comparison with other Australian places. Imagine you would live there. If you are in The Reverend Jesse Custer you would have found a great answer to this dullness, which is to play furious hardcore to give it a total punch in the face.
Because that is what The Reverend Jesse Custer does. They create a sound which is full of raw rage and anger. They remind me of an old Converge mixed with Turmoil and bits of Napalm Death. All blended together to make you want to go into the nearest circle pit and kung-fu kick the shit out of everybody.
‘Perpetual Victim’ has 5 tracks and is finished almost as quickly as it started. There is a lot of chaos on this release, but it is all constructed chaos and it sure makes the adrenaline boil in my veins. ‘Perpetual Victim’ is full of emotion as well. The singer shouts, screams, grunts and growls as if there is no tomorrow. I really shouldn’t spend too many words on this release as I think you just need to check these guys out yourself.
If you have any soft spot for crusty hardcore with loads of chaotic metalcore and grindcore elements then this band is your new best friend.
‘Perpetual Victim’ is out 14th November 2012 on 10″ vinyl and digital download through Australian DIY label Lesstalk Records.
