Brisbane based Guards of May rock up to the world with their debut album Future Eyes. Billed as a progressive rock outfit I have to admit that I found very little that was progressive here. Guards of May are, however, a competent bunch of noisy, commercial rock meisters who’ll no doubt appeal to the stadium rock crowd. There’s not huge things wrong with Future Eyes, it’s a well produced record, an upbeat, confident, debut; and the title track Future Eyes and Numbers in particular stand out as very strong songs. To my ears though it all became a bit homogenous as each song started to blend into one. It’s a shame as I think this is a band with quite a lot of potential, but with so many interesting bands bursting out of Australia these days – Tame Impala, Amorphous Androgynous – they need to raise their game and take a few more risks to become truly phenomenal.  On the upside, there’s an appetite out there for this kind of pop-rock and I think with a few lucky breaks we may hear more from Guards of May in the future. It’s just – with the exception of ‘Numbers’ – not my cup of tea, that’s all.
