I’m Gilbert Potts and I live in Melbourne, Australia, the centre of both sport and music in the universe. As I have little interest in sport I listen to as much new music as I can. I found that I could write about this music and share it with others in late 2011 when asked by Dan, the boss of e&d to do just that.

I like to stand near the front at gigs, but sometimes I don’t.

Thanks to everyone who makes music – it’s what separates us from aliens.

Shy, Low – Binary Opposition

While Shy, Low’s new release Binary Opposition doesn’t break new ground it’s difficult to fault the writing and performance. The texture, depth and emotion make this an enjoyable listen. – By Gilbert Potts.

Interview: Jeremy Galindo, This Will Destroy You

Sydney’s Bird’s Robe Records recently announced the impending first-ever tour of Australia by Texan instrumental rock band This Will Destroy You. We caught up with guitarist Jeremy Galindo ahead of the tour.

Fen – Dustwalker

I get the feeling this third album from post-black metal band Fen, “Dustwalker”, is meant to be intensely moody and bleak. Now I’m not saying it’s devoid of atmosphere, but to me it’s more melancholic with some anger thrown in at parts. In fact many pa …

Cult of Luna – Vertikal

The more post-metal sludge I hear the more convinced I am that it’s sitting at or very near the current evolutionary peak of rock and metal, and there, with one hand firmly grasping the flag as it fights for its share, is Cult of Luna. Nowhere else doe …

Small Town Incident – Malcontent

Guitar, bass, drums, vocals. Sometimes you just want pared-back, inventive rock. Tunes you can hum to but are not endless chorus. Riffs that are neither underdone nor overused. Rhythm that pops out of the groove often enough that you don’t get bored. V …

Our Ceasing Voice – That Day Last November

“Time heals all wounds”. It’s the solace people offer when they really don’t know what to say in response to someone’s loss because everyone knows there’s nothing anyone can do. For those who have suffered the loss it can be hurtful. Perhaps they don’t …

Tidings – Tidings

There have been many good strong instrumental rock releases this year, most of which I just didn’t find time to listen to or indeed know about. Luckily I have some very good imaginary friends on Twitter who recommend records to me, plus the stuff that …

Tomydeepestego – Nero

At its high points this third album from Italian instrumental band Tomydeepestego is heavy, deep and intense. “Nero” has some great lighter moments too – the band clearly looking to add to the basic formula and provide some contrast to the heaviness. S …

Interview: Sleep Lady

When Sleep Lady’s album, ‘So Long Lonely Ghost’ arrived pretty much unheralded at E&D towers we were blown away, it’s a truly fantastic record that touches on many of the styles we love here and seldom has one record been received with such universal e …
