(((o))): So, first and foremost, who are Nately’s Whore’s Kid Sister and what are your musical backgrounds?
Just a bunch of mates. Met through school, work, pubs etc. We're all self taught with eclectic-ish tastes.
(((o))): How did the band come together?
John had a few tunes written a few years ago. We jammed them and went from there.
(((o))): Please describe your sound in poetic form.
Somewhat melodic,
Heavy tones,
Inappropriate tunings,
Tumultuous nonsense.
(((o))): Has your local music scene had any impact on you as a band?
A little bit yeah. We've taken influence from some of the bands that were knocking about a few years ago. Mass, The Flowers of Evil, Kappernicus, Moleck. Other bands and venues have helped us get gigs along the way.
(((o))): Your first record, ‘Ribs’, came out last year and it’s just about sunk in with me now! What can you tell us about that record and the creative process behind it?
A few of the tunes had been around for a while, written with just a guitar and vocals. We jammed those and developed them. We had a few drones and samples we'd collected (Man Outside Cumberland Arms most notably), and built riffs and melodies around those. We were fairly well rehearsed before we went in the studio so we felt comfortable getting nicely toasted and getting the energy going whilst we were in their with Sam Grant at Blank Studios.
You've got to be shit hot. You need to be perfect every time. A really good vocalist is essential, or at least a unique sounding one (unless you're instrumental). We couldn't really say for sure as we've had little experience with the 'music industry', at least the professional/lucrative aspect of it.
(((o))): Every band has different aims. What would have to happen for NWKS to make you feel that you’d “made it”, so to speak?
Just to be able to do it for a living. Twenty grand a year each would be amazing. To be consistently creative and enthusiastic about it would be the best.
(((o))): You are, I believe, named after an unnamed character in Joseph Heller’s novel ‘Catch-22’. What is it about the anonymity of the name that appeals to you?
It's more that she's pathetic and nobody gives a shit about her, and she's always copying the whores in the brothel. There's something pathetic in our songs and it's impossible not to copy something.
(((o))): I know you’re pretty big beer fans. As a sharer of that particular passion I couldn’t not ask what your favourite brews of the moment are?
Titanic Plum Porter; Darkstar APA/Original; Wylam Tyne Craft; Brewdog Punk IPA; Brooklyn Lager - Thornbridge IPA; Brewdog Jackhammer.
Tough question.
(((o))): We have another column called Echoes of the Past in which we get people to write about albums that have particularly influenced them. What would you guys choose to write about in that column?
There's too many! One of them would be Oasis. NO! BLUR!
(((o))): This is ostensibly a column for introducing new bands. Any suggestions as to who we ought to include in the near future?
We recently danced to Razmatazz Lorry Excitement and we never dance, so he must be doing something right. Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs are good too, and Glishy Weather.
(((o))): What are the band’s plans for the near future?
Write more songs and try to improve really. We want to be a better live act. We should really practice our instruments a lot more, just to piss all over everything.
