The brilliantly monikered Siberian Hell Sounds hail from the sunny climes of Brisbane, Australia, but the crushing assault delivered on new EP ???? is far from a cheerful  disposition and all the better for it.

Self-proclaiming to be ‘at the cross roads between Pig Destroyer and Amenra’ is a bold move considering the respected and disparate nature of these afore mentioned acts, but happily very apt as Siberian Hell Sounds live up to the intention (and then some) by serving up four vicious slices of brutal intensity.

Track 1 sets up shop with black metal-esque chiming guitars that suddenly leap into ripping grindcore that also about turns into slow motion doom, which in turn morphs into chaotic d-beat blasting; all high quality interpretations of the sound while through all this the front man is screaming with impassioned fury.

The carnage is all over in three minutes, but there is no let up for the wicked as the barreling double bass drumming propels us into the second track – THAT IS PACKED WITH MONSTROUSLY AMAZING RIFFS (see 00:45 and 1:25 especially) – played via a truly glorious filthy guitar tone that leads into some serious Amenra worship (of the best kind) amongst the blast beats in track three.

Somehow the opening of the final track somehow manages to be even more furiously filthy than what came before settling into grinding doom laden death metal.

Wowzer.

Fun (pointless) fact: The album title and track listing are all symbols that iPods do not recognise so it comes up blank when on the display.
