Disastroid are great. They have a great name, some amazing artwork and they sound a little bit like Melvins gone math rock. This 2-track 7 inch release is my introduction to this band from San Francisco, California, and it definitely wets my appetite for more. For those who are interested, the band consists of 3 members, Enver Koneya (guitar/vocals), Travis Williams (bass) and Braden McGaw (drums) and to date they have released three full-lengths and a handful of EPs.
Side A contains the title track, ‘Love is What you Bring on Home’, which is also the shorter track on this 7 inch. It’s just over 2 minutes of fuzzy guitars, intricate rhythms and heavy, galloping bass. It’s especially this bass sound that I love on this mini release, as it has that Steve Albini or The Jesus Lizard kinda feel to it.
The track on the B-side, ‘Gadabout’, is nearly 2,5 times longer than the title track, but it definitely leaves a long lasting impression of fuzz, rhythms and sludginess.
Disastroid takes elements of sludge, noise rock, stoner, post-hardcore and fuzz, and successfully mixes these together to create a very attractive sound.
And just look at that artwork again, which was made by Aaron Gregory of fellow Californians Giant Squid. It’s my 5 year old son’s favourite record in my collection already, because dinosaurs. Roar!
