Damien Done is the acoustic-driven punk/rock and roll project of As Friends Rust’s singer Damien Moyal. Having spent the last two decades playing and touring with hardcore bands like Shai Hulud, Culture, Morning Again, and As Friends Rust, Moyal recently recorded songs that diverge from his other projects, exploring a dark and minimalistic post-punk/rock and roll sound not too far removed from Danzig and Dax Riggs. Those songs will finally be available on physical format with the release of a full-length album entitled Stay Black and a 7” EP, both coming out on Demons Run Amok Entertainment on July 8th.
When asked about the track and the upcoming release Damien said: “I’m not sure where the idea came from, but ‘Dude Becomes Sea’ is about a slave ship whose cargo (the slaves) overthrow the crew, seize the ship and wreck it in, sort of an “I’d rather die on my feet than live on my knees” gesture. The spirit of one of the slaves – presumably the guy behind the coup – becomes one with the ocean itself, and this song serves as his warning to future travellers as well as his goodbye letter to those he left on land.
Stay Black was written and recorded in 2002, but despite plans for an immediate release, it saw delay after delay until eventually the release was forgotten about entirely. Somehow the songs had found their way around the internet, building a small cult following, and some appeared on the soundtrack of an adult film as well as the Vice Guide to Travel DVD, but I never thought it would see a physical release. Needless to say, I was pretty surprised when Demons Run Amok Entertainment expressed interest in finally bringing Stay Black into the world, and I agreed right away. Despite the passing of 14 years, I think the songs make as much sense as ever, if not more. I don’t quite know what to call the style of music that I’m writing, but I think this record is minimal and honest and maybe a bit unnerving, and I really hope people enjoy it, whatever it is.”
