For Sapphire Needle by The Zephyrs

Release date: January 27, 2023
Label: Acuarela

It has been a while since we heard from Scottish veterans The Zephyrs, but For Sapphire Needle, their sixth album was worth the wait.

For those unfamiliar with the band, the fact that this release comes on the Spanish label Acuarela might be something of a sign of what kind of music they can expect. Essentially, anything that borders on the good pop rock of all shapes and sizes might find its way on the label.

And in many ways, that also quickly describes where The Zephyrs and the Nichol brothers, the bands’ main force come from – all shapes and sizes of good, melodic pop-rock, whether it comes from Edinburgh or Los Angeles, to mention the two seemingly guiding points here.

Along with great melodic sense, you can also feel the experience that almost 25 years on the scene gives you (the Nichol brothers actually picked up The Zephyr’s name from where their father left it back in the seventies).

Yet you can also hear that The Zephyrs are actually trying (and succeeding) at updating not only the sound of the original band but all the musical inspirations you can sense and hear in their music—a fully successful comeback.
