Sophia Space Agency (Melpomeni Kermanidou) is a vocalist, keyboard player, composer, producer, sound artist and performance artist. Her unique style is difficult to categorise. From orchestral and cinematic torch songs to electronic minimalism, her music defies genre but her influences include avant-garde singers such as Meredith Monk (with whom she has studied) and Cathy Berberian, and composers Tim Hecker, William Basinski, and Jon Hopkins.
She is a pilot artist for Brian Eno’s Earth Percent, the chair of the Future Sound Experience Council for the Ivors Academy and only ever wears recycled clothes.
Her works concentrate on the human condition, the feminine and the possibilities of the universe. Our premiere ‘What a Mess’ is taken from her forthcoming album about climate change. It’s a collection of sounds and textures made by long effects-chains and sound synthesis.
Catch Sophia Space Agency live on Sunday 24 September at Woodbridge Ambient Music Festival.
