SANDS is the work of Andrew Sands, a London-based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer who has been musically active since 2017. His new release is a mix of psych, shoegaze, and indie pop. In his song by song run through, Sands compares the opening track ‘The Line’s Been Drawn’ to Neil Young and Crazy Horse along with Hawkwind. Fine vocals and an expansive soundscape really make this song special. Sands has a penchant for melodies and this slice of ear candy is really solid. ‘Transmission’ is another winner, embellished with buzzy synths and a catchy melody. It is based on a place where Sands lived that was exceedingly busy. ‘Honey Honey’ reminds me of oodles of 60s and 70s bands with radio friendly fare, only with the oomph of power pop (think Shoes and their ilk).

‘Through This Avenue – The Game’ is a tribute to Roky Erickson and the 13th Floor Elevators. Don’t expect it to sound like that vaunted band, but in the same spirit that some of Roky’s music was offered, this one may be fierce and vulnerable, as Sands explains in his track by track sheet. I think it is perfect soundtrack music, and I like the cinematic feel. ‘Young Man’ is a pretty song with horns and gospel harmonies. ‘When It Starts to Rain’ is faintly reminiscent of The Smiths, especially with the ringing guitar, like a whiff of Johnny Marr. It is the best song so far in this song suite. Very cool. ‘Around the Moon’ is exciting, music for a movie yet to be made, as we music writers like to say. But seriously, this is excellent work! ‘Are You the Devil?’ reveals Andrew’s glam influences, even hearkening back to early Bowie. Very unique and interesting!

‘Third World War’ is an amalgam of 60s nursery psych with bold horns and whimsy. ‘Sing To Me My Dear’ has a waltz cadence and a romantic feel that takes you back to the golden age of Hollywood. It is glitzy and gorgeous. ‘Horizon’ ends out this collection, and it’s a dreamy confection.

This is a surprising album with a wide variety of influences and genres collected in its grooves. It is lovely and moving and anyone who enjoys excellent production coupled with the musical chops this fellow has cannot go wrong. This is easy to recommend to all my friends. Not to be missed.
