The productive line of all-instrumental beat-dominated music seems to be firmly nailed to the dance floor these days, with the more experimental, left-field trends, left somewhere in the background in the hands of artists who want to dare to take the routes that would rather explore than follow.
The artist behind the moniker Bobbyy, a producer and drummer from Los Angeles seems to be taking those latter routes on his debut solo album Buckets, as he has previously worked with Seattle bands sunking and High Pulp.
Here, he works with the likes of Pink Siifu, Hi Tech, Blvck Svm, and others to create bet-oriented instrumentals (with subtle background vocals here and there) more reminiscent of explorations of artists like Madlib and Daedelus, trying to combine elements that might have been around, but in a seemingly haphazard manner that does create a very specific, complex order. The result is a set of beat-oriented compositions that ebb and flow and ultimately work.
And it is an order that works so fluidly and charmingly throughout the nine beat explorations here, without a single misstep that can often be found in similar works to Bobbyy’s Buckets. It turns out to be buckets full of hidden gems.
