There are half-joking sayings in the writing and artistic (music) worlds: journalists are wannabe writers, and music critics are wannabe musicians.
Well, neither all journalists fail as writers, nor do all music critics fail as musicians. Oh, in the case of Mark Trecka, we are actually talking about all four roles, as Trecka is all of those, a journalist, a writer, a music critic, and a musician and he also sometimes plays the role of a PR man.
All those roles do figure in Trecka’s new album Fool Signals. He is obviously leaning towards more experimental sounds that still follow some of the lines of ‘regular’ songwriting – something between Brian Eno’s vocal work and the more melodic side of Scott Walker.
That is a very tough musical line to create something that is personal, individual, and at the same time music that can find its audience, as you really have to know what you are doing to be able to come up with something plausible.
Trecka, with a help of a number of collaborators, most prominently Evan Hydzik, and as somebody who has heard so many sounds in all scopes of his work, was able to integrate what he knows into music that both makes sense and reaches its ultimate goal – is something you can listen to, think and enjoy (or all of those at the same time).
Along the way, Trecka proves that you can be a writer, journalist, music critic, and musician at the same time without faltering with your music.
