Nostalgia by Frankie Sunswept & The Sliver Moons
Release date: February 14, 2025Label: Romanus Records
When a debut album appears these days, it can be one of two things – a breath of fresh air that brings in something new, or, possibly, a new (or not so new) look at something that went on before.
Then, what about some middle ground between the two? That just might sound great for these, some consider dry musical times but comes as a somewhat rare occurrence with new artists/bands.
Well, it seems that a NYC 6-piece that operates under the name of Frankie Sunswept & The Sliver Moons have placed their feet firmly into that debut middle ground with their first official effort titled Nostalgia.
Frankie Sunswept (guitar, vocals), Kimberly Haven (keyboard, percussion, vocals), Angela Carlucci (mellotron, vocals), Sam Harmet (guitar), Tom Beuchel (bass), and Ben Engel (drums), with Sunswempt and Haven being main songwriters, have that new outlook on everything – from Ethio-jazz and psych pop to proto-punk and krautrock and what not else, sometimes even within a single song like ‘Futurless’ here that sounds like King Gizzard crew at their modal best with added vocal harmonies, or ‘Tears of Crocodile’, that adds touches of prog and Fleetwood Mac style pop for good measure.
It all could have turned into incredible musical chaos, but instead, the band on a whole are able to keep in sensible and musically tight, bringing that fresh air to some old (and not so old) musical concepts. Nostalgia with a twist.
